Master and slave servers

• a.k.a. primary and secondary

• zone administrator sets up primary/master

• asks friends or ISPs to set up slaves/secondaries

• slave periodically checks with master to see if data has changed

• transfers new zone if necessary

• serial number in SOA record in each zone
